UNIVERSAL SOCKETS AND ADAPTERS FOR TORQUE-CONTROL APPLICATIONS
Universal Adapters, and Universal Sockets are great for getting into awkward areas during assembly. In every industry, whether it is Automotive, Aircraft, Shipbuilding, Boats, Electronics, Appliance and etc, there are places that nuts and screws are installed that are cramped, awkward and just plain hard to get to. This can be particularly true when it comes time to make repairs. Most conventional universal adapters and sockets allow for axial misalignment of up to 30 or even 40 degrees. this can be a real plus except when it is important to be sure that the torque being applied to the wrench is reaching the fastener. Boeing and others have found that if the 'TILT' or 'Angular Offset' is greater than 15 degrees, the torque applied through the wrench does not reliably reach the fastener. For that reason, Boeing and others specify the use of tools that limit the 'TILT' to 15 degrees maximum in torque sensitive areas.
